MUKACHEVE, 16 April 2004 - The Committee of Voters of Ukraine held a round table on April 16 in Mukacheve (Zakapattia Region) entitled "Local Elections in Ukraine: Actual Problems and Possible Ways to Overcome Them." Issues on the agenda included the laws concerning local elections in Ukraine, standards of democratic elections, and how to encourage objective and balanced media coverage.

Representatives of state agencies in Zakarpattia and the local Mukacheve state government participated in the round table. In addition, members of the Territorial Election Commission, mayoral candidates, representatives of diplomatic missions and international organizations, experts, NGOs, as well as nationwide and local media were also invited to take part in the roundtable.

The OSCE Project Coordinator in Ukraine, in cooperation with the Canadian International Development Agency and the Swiss Cooperation Office, financially supported this event.
